About Alexander Crummell

Alexander Crummell was an Episcopal priest, educator, missionary, and antislavery advocate whose work linked Black religious leadership with education and institution-building. After studying at Queens’ College, Cambridge, he spent years in Liberia as a missionary, teacher, and professor at Liberia College. Returning to the United States, he led St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., promoted Black educational and ecclesiastical independence, and helped found the American Negro Academy in 1897.
