About Alfred Pellan
Alfred Pellan was a pioneering Canadian modernist whose paintings absorbed Cubist, Fauvist, and Surrealist influences while developing a highly personal visual language. After studying in Paris from 1926 to 1940, he returned to Quebec and helped open the province’s art scene to modernism through teaching, exhibitions, and the 1948 Prisme d’yeux manifesto. His wide-ranging practice also included prints, murals, theatre design, and illustrated poetry, earning him lasting recognition as a major figure in twentieth-century Quebec art.
