Apel·les Mestres i Oñós

Apel·les Mestres i Oñós was a Catalan writer, poet, illustrator, dramatist, and musician whose work often combined text, image, and sound. Trained at Barcelona’s Escola de Llotja, he became a leading illustrator for satirical periodicals including La Campana de Gràcia, while publishing poetry such as Avant!, Microcosmos, and Cants íntims. His multidisciplinary practice and conception of the book as a unified artwork made him an important precursor to several modernist and graphic-art developments in Catalonia.
