Blanca Varela

Blanca Varela was a Peruvian poet associated with the Generation of ’50, whose rigorous, intensely personal work became influential in contemporary Hispanic American poetry. After studying at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and spending time in Paris, she published her first collection, Ese puerto existe, in 1959 with a prologue by Octavio Paz. Her major books include Valses y otras falsas confesiones, Canto villano, Ejercicios materiales, and Concierto animal; she later received the Octavio Paz, Federico García Lorca, and Reina Sofía poetry prizes.
