Carlos Gardel

Carlos Gardel was a singer, songwriter, and actor whose expressive voice helped establish tango canción as a major popular-music form. His 1917 recording of “Mi Noche Triste” helped popularize sung tango, and he later expanded his audience through international tours and films. Gardel died in a 1935 airplane crash in Medellín at the height of his career; debate over his birthplace remains part of his biography.
