Chico Mendes

Chico Mendes was a Brazilian rubber tapper, trade-union leader, and environmentalist who organized Amazonian forest workers to defend their livelihoods and resist deforestation. He helped advance the idea of extractive reserves, where local communities could sustainably gather forest products while protecting the rainforest. His activism brought international attention to Amazon conservation before his assassination in Xapuri in 1988.
