About Gilbert Stuart
Gilbert Stuart was a leading American portraitist whose work captured the likenesses and character of figures in the early United States. Trained in London under Benjamin West, he built a successful career in Britain and Ireland before returning to America in 1793. He is best known for his unfinished Athenaeum portrait of George Washington, the model for the image on the one-dollar bill, and he also portrayed Presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe.
