Ida B. Wells

Ida B. Wells was a pioneering journalist and newspaper publisher whose reporting exposed racial violence and challenged the justifications used to defend lynching. After three acquaintances were murdered by a Memphis mob in 1892, she launched a sustained anti-lynching campaign through editorials, pamphlets, investigations, and public speaking. She also advocated for Black women’s suffrage and helped establish organizations that shaped the early civil rights movement.
