Jan Neruda

Jan Neruda was a Czech poet, writer, journalist, and theater critic associated with the Máj generation, a major force in nineteenth-century Czech literary culture. His career combined poetry and prose with sustained newspaper work, especially as a feuilletonist and literary and theater critic. His best-known prose work, *Povídky malostranské* (*Tales of the Lesser Quarter*, 1878), portrays life in Prague’s Malá Strana through sharply observed character sketches and social detail.
