Julius Nyerere

Julius Nyerere was the central leader of Tanganyika’s independence movement and became its first prime minister in 1961, later serving as Tanzania’s first president. He helped unite Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964 and promoted Ujamaa, a socialist program emphasizing national self-reliance and social equality. Nyerere left office in 1985 but remained an influential voice in African unity and liberation.
