Óscar Romero

Óscar Romero was a Salvadoran Catholic priest who became Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977 amid escalating political violence and social unrest. He used his public ministry to defend poor and oppressed communities, denouncing injustice and violence in the name of the Gospel. Assassinated while celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980, Romero was canonized by Pope Francis in 2018 as a martyr and is commemorated internationally as a symbol of human-rights advocacy.
