Samuel Finley Breese Morse

Samuel Finley Breese Morse began his career as a portrait and history painter, helping found the National Academy of Design and serving as its first president. In the 1830s, he redirected his energies toward developing a practical single-wire electric telegraph and the signaling system later known as Morse code. His work helped establish long-distance telegraphy as a major communications technology.
