William Paley

William Paley (1743–1805) was an English clergyman and philosopher whose work joined Christian apologetics with utilitarian moral philosophy. His best-known book, Natural Theology (1802), argued from the organized complexity of nature toward an intelligent creator, drawing examples from medicine and natural history. Paley also helped shape eighteenth-century debates about ethics, religion, and the relationship between reason and Christian belief.
